Mourinho Reveals Why Mikel Was Chelsea’s Best Player Vs. Newcastle

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed why John Obi Mikel can be the best player in a blue shirt on a given match day, despite featuring infrequently for the Blues since the start of the season.

Mikel started for the first time this season in the league against Newcastle United, and despite the 2-1 loss to Alan Pardew’s side, he emerged from the game with significant credit, with many suggesting that his performance was the best on the park.

Mourinho has now insisted that the players in his squad are all hungry to make an impression when they are given an opportunity in the first team, and this is why a rarely used star can be the best player.

Mikel’s display against Newcastle was one such display that Mourinho pointed to as evidence that his management techniques are working this season.

He said: “The first time he played [from the start in the Premier League] was Newcastle and he was our best player.

“How can he be our best player if he didn’t play in three months? Because he was working every day at the top level. Sad, frustrated, not happy? Maybe. But professional – that’s what I expect from the players.

“It’s the concept of helping the team. Everybody has to be ready to sacrifice for the team, to give everything for the team, to think about the team and not to be selfish. This is the way I want a team to be.

“The one that comes on in the last five minutes, he’s a crucial player. If he makes a mistake the team loses; if he doesn’t, the team wins. Everybody wins, everybody loses.

“I want a short squad. In a short squad, everybody is important. I need every player. And when I sign a player, I don’t say ‘it’s you plus 10’. I say ‘it’s you plus 21 or 22’.

“You have to know the squad is good at Chelsea. If you’re at a Chelsea as a goalkeeper, you can’t imagine that you’re the only good goalkeeper. It’s the same for the strikers. For me, all of this is very normal.”

10 Alan Pardews Why Newcastle Will Beat Arsenal

Newcastle United have been rejuvenated in recent weeks, a surprising turnaround given the level of vitriol levelled at manager Alan Pardew only a few months ago.

At that point, they hadn’t won in an age, a run stretching back to last season, and there looked to be little chance that Pardew would be able to fix the situation.

The north east club’s recent form was capped off with a sensational 2-1 win against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea on Saturday, ending the Stamford Bridge side’s undefeated run.

With struggling Arsenal set to face them at the weekend, Newcastle could be on for another shock.

Here are Spoughts’ top 10 reasons why the Gunners should worry about Newcastle at the weekend:

Pardew’s Smile

Look at that grin. There’s a man who is happy, probably at the football.

Pardew’s Hair

See how immaculately groomed he is. No other manager can match up to that.

Pardew’s Glasses

Glasses let you see better. Football is mainly watched. Advantage: Pardew.

Pardew’s Righteous Anger

Imagine being on the receiving end of this torrent of abuse. Generations of your family would suffer the consequences. Arsene Wenger beware.

Pardew’s Joy

Look at how happy he is. There’s no way he won’t put his genius towards replicating that feeling at the weekend.

Pardew’s Knowing Glance

Oh, he just knows.

Pardew’s Quiet Fury

Sometimes anger is best left un-shouted. When Pardew chooses to do that, you know it’s one of those times.

Pardew’s Cheeky Grin

How could any player fall out with this man? Devotion must be absolute at Newcastle.

Pardew’s Beard

He has hairs on his chin! This man is unique.

Pardew’s Hand Gesture, Letting Us Know It’ll All Be Okay

Sometimes you just need to be told it is going to be fine. Alan Pardew doesn’t even need to open his mouth to say that. It’s all in his hands. If he shows as much mastery of management as he does hand gestures, there is no way Newcastle can lose to Arsenal at the weekend.

Newcastle Chase Shock Chelsea Signing – reports

Newcastle United are chasing a shock emergency loan move for Chelsea’s third choice goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

The north east side have been hit with a series of injuries to stoppers in recent weeks, with both first choice Tim Krul and his reserve Rob Elliot ruled out for extended periods of time.

As a result, Alan Pardew was forced to turn to youngster Jak Alnwick for an extended appearance during the clash with Chelsea at the weekend.

Despite having only ever played first team football for non-league side Gateshead prior to his appearance at St. James’ Park, Alnwick performed well and only conceded one goal as 10-man Newcastle ended Chelsea’s undefeated run with a 2-1 win.

However, The Sun are now reporting that Pardew wants a more reliable option until his experienced ‘keepers return.

Schwarzer is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, with both Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois ahead of him in the pecking order.

It now remains to be seen if a deal can be agreed and if the Premier League will ratify an extraordinary transfer outside of the agreed windows.
