Chelsea Boss Pays Tribute To Departing Star

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has paid tribute to departing shot stopper Mark Schwarzer, who has left the Stamford Bridge to join Premier League side Leicester City.

Schwarzer has found opportunities limited at the Blues since joining them from Fulham as second choice goalkeeper in the summer of 2013.

He spent five years at Fulham prior to moving to Chelsea, but left before last season kicked off, a year in which the London side were relegated to the Championship.

The Australian goalkeeper has spent the majority of his careeer in English football, having previously played for both Bradford City and Middlesbrough in the English top flight.

His move to Leicester comes after the long term injury suffered by Kasper Schmeichel.

Schwarzer made only four appearances for Chelsea while at Stamford Bridge, and saw his place as second choice goalkeeper taken over by Petr Cech this season after the return of Thibaut Courtois from his loan spell.

Mourinho was full of praise for the 42 year old Schwarzer, telling the press after Chelsea’s FA Cup win on Sunday: “He was a fantastic guy for us.

“As a goalkeeper when we needed him he was there for us. On behalf of myself and the group we wish him all the best.”

Newcastle Chase Shock Chelsea Signing – reports

Newcastle United are chasing a shock emergency loan move for Chelsea’s third choice goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

The north east side have been hit with a series of injuries to stoppers in recent weeks, with both first choice Tim Krul and his reserve Rob Elliot ruled out for extended periods of time.

As a result, Alan Pardew was forced to turn to youngster Jak Alnwick for an extended appearance during the clash with Chelsea at the weekend.

Despite having only ever played first team football for non-league side Gateshead prior to his appearance at St. James’ Park, Alnwick performed well and only conceded one goal as 10-man Newcastle ended Chelsea’s undefeated run with a 2-1 win.

However, The Sun are now reporting that Pardew wants a more reliable option until his experienced ‘keepers return.

Schwarzer is surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, with both Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois ahead of him in the pecking order.

It now remains to be seen if a deal can be agreed and if the Premier League will ratify an extraordinary transfer outside of the agreed windows.
