Arsenal Defender Reveals Humble Route To Stardom

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has revealed his humble road to stardom, one which saw him fly under the radar for a considerable spell prior to making it in professional football, as reported by Arsenal.com.

He believes that it is that grounded beginning to his career that has allowed him to reach the top level of the game, something he has achieved.

Mertesacker famously won the World Cup in Brazil this summer with the German national side, showing his standing in world football.

He began his career after developing at Hannover 96, making his first team debut for the side at the age of 19.

Despite spending much of his time studying while he was first playing football, he believes he held a subconscious self belief that stood him in good stead when the opportunity to play in the first team arrived at his doorstep, after a series of injuries to his teammates at Hannover.

He said: “I was not the big talent, so I kept football as a hobby.

“The motivation was always to be fit and involved in a team, and not more – not to be a professional one day, not to be that keen on doing well every day.

“It was more fun for me, and that was good for me. It kept me grounded and very quiet.

“I took it as a hobby but I kept the belief inside me subconsciously and that was the key. No one went crazy when there was a defeat, no one went crazy when they said maybe I wasn’t good enough and went to the second team.

“That was very good for me. I stayed quiet and waited for the right moment, when I was 17 or 18.

“It’s all about opportunities and a bit of luck. It went so well for me.

“I needed a few injuries to some senior players to get to my first pre-season in the first team, and then some game time that was broadcasted on television. I did well then.

“You have to take that opportunity. It’s not only to get that, it’s to take it as well and perform solidly.

“That’s the key at that stage. I told myself it was now or never and I decided to take [the chance]. I could never predict that so many highlights would follow.”

Arsenal Giant: ‘We Deserved’ Hull City FA Cup Victory

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes that his side deserved the win against Hull City in the FA Cup on Sunday, as reported by Arsenal.com.

The German international featured as the Gunners managed a 2-0 victory against the Humberside team, a game that was a repeat of last season’s FA Cup final.

Unlike that tie, however, Hull offered little threat in front of goal, and Arsenal bossed proceedings in the first half.

They were rewarded when Mertesacker himself converted from an Alexis Sanchez corner kick.

Sanchez, as he has often done this season, then wrapped things up for the north London side, securing an important win that sees them progress to the fourth round.

Mertesacker, who captained Arsenal in the game, believes that the result was nothing less than his side deserved after a series of shaky displays in the weeks prior to the game.

He also revealed that Sanchez’s strike settled their nerves.

“We have good memories when I think about Wembley and then today,” Mertesacker said. “It was a tough fight until the end but we deserved it.

“In the first half it could have been three or four-nil. Then Alexis scored and we were relieved.

“The second goal was a big relief for the players and he’s a massive threat to any team. We’re delighted with his performances and we need to keep him fit.

“We were composed and deserved it. I’m proud of our team because no matter who’s playing we stick together.”

Secret Talks Over Midfield Maestro Joining Arsenal

Arsenal star Per Mertesacker has admitted that he and Mesut Ozil have repeatedly tried to tempt Sami Khedira in making the switch to the north London side in the near future, as reported by the Daily Star.

In a wide ranging question and answer session with the gigantic defender, Mertesacker said that he and his compatriot have tried to tempt their international teammate into making a long mooted move.

Khedira’s contract at Real Madrid is running down, and there seems little chance of him agreeing a new deal with the Spanish giants, considering how long the saga over his contract has gone on for.

His availability in the summer has found several clubs sniffing around him since the end of last season, with many hoping to snatch a bargain for the World Cup winner.

However, Mertesacker is hopeful that Arsenal have the edge, and revealed that him and his fellow German Ozil have tried to win Khedira round.

He said: “I’m up for more quality Germans to [join] the club.

“Ozil and I spoke with Khedira a few times to join Arsenal. His contract is up next summer.”
