Everton Boss Targets European Glory

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has targeted European glory in the Europa League this season, despite the majority of managers in the Premier League regarding it as nothing more than a nuisance in the footballing calendar, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Martinez, however, is excited about the idea of taking Everton into European football, and feels as though his squad is now strong enough to allow them to compete across the competitions his side will take part in this season.

Thursday night’s clash with Wolfsburg at Goodison Park is the first time that Everton have played in Europe since December 2009, and Martinez sees this as the first step to the club firmly establishing themselves as a fixture in Europe going forward.

He also feels as though the club should be targeting victory in the competition, and hopes that his side will emerge from the tournament with the trophy at the end of the campaign.

Martinez said: “It is an exciting game for us. Coming back to European competition is what we want and what we worked extremely hard for last season. Everyone is excited at Goodison.

“It is 52 years the first time we were involved in European competition so that shows you the history and how important it is for Everton be in European competitions again, and we are looking forward to it.

“We have seven games in three weeks but the squad is big enough. The academy and the younger players we produce at the club are ready to help the team. It is something that we embrace.

“It’s not an excuse to have seven games in such a short period of time. What we want is to be as good as we can, every time we’re on the pitch and the more competitions we can be involved in, the better.”

Everton Boost In Battle To Re-sign 20-Year-Old Spanish Sensation – reports

Everton have been given a huge boost in their hopes of bringing Gerard Deulofeu back to Goodison park, with Barcelona becoming frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities while playing for Sevilla, as reported by the Daily Express.

Unlike his time at Everton, where he was often used as an impact substitute, the Catalan club had allowed Deulofeu to join Sevilla under the assumption that he would play a significant amount of football for the Spanish side.

However, the La Masia graduate has featured for only 17 minutes during Sevilla’s opening four fixtures, and according to reports in his home land, this is not to Barcelona manager Luis Enrique’s liking.

Barca could yet terminate his season long loan deal, which would put Everton in pole position to sign him again.

Roberto Martinez would not be able to bring him back until January, but despite interest in doing so before, the arrival of Christian Atsu on loan from Chelsea might mean there is no place in Everton’s squad for the young star.

21-Year-Old Everton Star Can Be The Best Player In The World – Teammate

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has backed his teammate Romelu Lukaku to become the best player in the world, having opened the scoring in sensational style against West Brom at the weekend, giving Everton their first win of the new season, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

His goal against his former side was his first of the new campaign, having made his loan move to the Toffees permanent this summer for £28 million. While Chelsea were keen to sell, Howard is of the belief that Lukaku can go on to surpass all expectations and go on to become one of the best players in the world.

Howard partly credits the youngster’s attitude, saying that unlike many young stars, the Belgian international works incredibly hard to improve.

The American shot stopper said: “He wants to be the best footballer in the world, he really does.

“That’s what he thinks of himself. He gets his head down and he works, and we push him.

“He’s electric, he’s alive, he celebrates goals in training, everything counts to him. Everything matters. That’s what you want to see. There are too many young kids that take it for granted. Romelu doesn’t. He cost a lot of money but he is not arrogant, he is hungry.

“He was always going to go for a big fee, but he is not affected by that stuff. He is a kid, a kid who likes to play video games and play football, that’s it – even the video games are football.

“He is not going to get distracted. With guys of his talent, the sky is the limit.”

Everton kick off their Europa League campaign this Thursday against VFL Wolfsburg at Goodison Park. Boss Roberto Martinez is keen for the side to do well in the competition, having qualified for it by finishing fifth in the Premier League last season.
