Arsenal Switch Defensive Target After Being Priced Out Of £31m Chase

Arsenal are said to have switched their defensive target for the January transfer window to Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, as reported by the Daily Express.

They had previously lined up a possible bid for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, but a supposed asking price of £31 million seems to have priced them out of the chase.

Hummels is considered to be one of the top defenders plying his trade in Europe today, but the player has been constantly linked with a switch to a series of clubs.

One of the main sides thought to be targeting Hummels were Manchester United, who were rumoured to be prepping a bid in the summer.

A move never materialised, however, and that opened up the possibility of a switch elsewhere.

However, Arsenal are now looking to back out of any possible move for Hummels, with Laporte a possible alternate target.

Arsenal are willing to spend up to £20 million in the coming transfer window.

Brilliant £30m Defender Wants Arsenal Switch – reports

Arsenal have been handed a huge boost ahead of the January transfer window, with Mats Hummels supposedly desiring a switch to the north London club in the near future, as reported by the Daily Express.

This will come as a blow to Manchester United, who have been tracking Hummels for an extended period of time.

Borussia Dortmund have already armed themselves for an expected January raid for the star defender.

Both Louis van Gaal and Arsene Wenger are thought to consider Hummels to be the ideal signing to fix their devastated defences.

The Premier League rivals have both suffered injury after injury at the back since the summer.

Wenger is thought to be willing to pay up to £30 million for the defender, which is what Dortmund value him at.

Arsenal need defensive improvements significantly, with Sunday’s game against Swansea seeing them lose a lead in quick time, with the game finishing 2-1 in favour of the Swans.

Liverpool Hero Tells Man Utd Boss To Target £32M German Supremo

Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher has told Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal to target Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, as reported by the Daily Star.

Man Utd have struggled defensively since the start of the new season, despite a huge outlay on talent during the summer, which saw the club spend a huge £150 million.

As a result, boss Van Gaal will almost certainly look to improve his defensive options in January, in order to fix his leaky back line.

One player that he targeted repeatedly over the summer was Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, but moves for him failed to be pushed through.

The German international has emerged as one of the world’s best defenders in recent years, and cemented this position by helping his country win the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

A move for him will almost definitely be difficult, given that Hummels has openly said that he has no interest in leaving Dortmund.

However, when asked on Twitter who Man Utd should sign in January, Carragher simply replied: “Hummels.”

Hummels is believed to be valued by Dortmund at around £32 million.
