Manchester United are set to make a surprise move for Real Madrid defender Marcelo in the January transfer window, as reported by fichajes.net.
It would come as something of a shock if they tried to sign Marcelo from Real, with the Old Trafford club having bought two left backs during the summer transfer window.
However, there are seemingly doubts about Louis Van Gaal’s opinion of Luke Shaw, with the Dutch manager having initially questioned his fitness.
The other left back that the club bought this summer, Marcos Rojo, has been used primarily as a central defender, and despite the return to fitness of other centre backs, he has continued to be used there.
This suggests that there might be an opportunity for another left back to be brought in, and Van Gaal has seemingly targeted Marcelo for that purpose.
Real would apparently not oppose his transfer in January, so the decision on whether to move rests with Marcelo.
