£20M Man Utd Star: Rooney Red Put Us Under Pressure

Manchester United’s Dutch international star Robin van Persie has revealed that Wayne Rooney’s red card against West Ham on Saturday made the last period of the clash a more difficult encounter than expected, as reported by the Daily Express.

Having followed up Rooney’s opener with a strike of his own, Van Persie saw West Ham put the Old Trafford club’s defence under incredible pressure towards the end of the game, with only an offside flag chalking out an equaliser from Kevin Nolan.

This was the result of Rooney’s red card, which came after he kicked out at Stewart Downing.

As a result, Rooney will be suspended for three games, but Van Persie revealed that the incident could have cost them the game, assuming they had not held out.

He said: “At times it was a bit nerve-wracking but we did ever so well and everyone fought really hard.

“I thought we played really well in the first half but in the second it was a completely different game because of the red card.

“It was a bit frustrating to concede a goal when we did because in that period in the game the only way they looked like scoring was from a set-piece and it happened, just before half-time.

“That was a bad moment for us but I think we did really in the end to win this game. For everyone involved with Manchester United I think this is about more than just the three points.”

It has to be said that West Ham were incredibly unlucky not to emerge from the game with a point, with only staunch defending keeping them at bay.

Revealed: Man Utd’s Headbutt Claim Against Weekend Foe

Manchester United have reason to complain after Diafra Sakho allegedly headbutted debuting defender Luke Shaw during Saturday’s clash, as reported by the Daily Express.

The West Ham striker could therefore face a charge from the Football Association, should the incident be proven by the Old Trafford club.

Man Utd stormed into the lead against West Ham, but the Red Devils struggled to keep the Hammers at bay.

A moment of madness from Wayne Rooney, which saw him kick out at Stewart Downing and receive a straight red card, put them under even more pressure, with an offside flag the only thing denying West Ham a late equaliser.

Rooney is set to miss three games, and the same punishment could befall Sakho, if he is charged.

The FA await the report from referee Lee Mason before deciding what to do to Sakho.

Shaw apparently complained to assistant referee Andy Garratt about the incident, and was left with a black eye.

Speaking about the game, Shaw said: “We have actually had a lot of bad luck, especially with Wazza’s red card as I would say there was a handball before that but the referee didn’t stop play.

“Earlier in the game, Sakho did the same to me.

“But I just focus on winning games and I’ll keep doing that.”

West Ham Boss Fears Man Utd Backlash

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has warned that he fears a backlash from Manchester United at the weekend, after their 5-3 loss against Leicester City a week ago, as reported by The Guardian.

The Old Trafford club were 3-1 up against Leicester going into the latter stages of the game, but conceded four without reply to lose a stunning goal fest.

West Ham, on the other hand, managed a 3-1 win against pre season title contenders Liverpool, stifling Brendan Rodgers’s side to perfection.

However, Allardyce does not feel as though this will make the task any easier on Saturday, and is worried about a Man Utd side looking for revenge.

Allardyce said: “No. I’m thinking a backlash.

“I think that because of the determination of the Man United players and the fact they are playing at Old Trafford.

“I know there’s quite a lot of new players playing there but certainly the demand of Manchester United is huge and they’ll be really fired up to make sure that they try and perform like they did against QPR and beat us.

“They will be pretty down about that performance they gave at Leicester and they will be hurting and they know the only way they can put that right is to get out onto the field and punish us for it – so we will have to be careful about that.

“A draw would be great for me, anything more than a draw would be outstanding as far as I’m concerned.

“They [the West Ham players] have got to look forward to a tough game at Old Trafford now and test their skills and test their ability at a stadium that can obviously be daunting for some players.

“Hopefully our new players won’t be daunted about the prospect of playing at Old Trafford on Saturday.”

Elsewhere, the former Bolton manager has questioned the fact that Man Utd have spent £150 million this summer, when they did not back David Moyes in similar circumstances after his arrival last season.

Man Utd have won only one game this season, beating Queens Park Rangers at home.
