Two Goal Man Utd Ace Admits To ‘Sloppy’ Display

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has admitted that the Old Trafford club were sloppy in their win against Southampton last night.

The Red Devils managed a 2-1 win, but few who watched and commented believed that they deserved the victory.

Despite taking an early lead through Van Persie, Louis van Gaal’s troops looked sloppy at the back and could have been punished by a Saints side that were on better form.

Graziano Pelle scored for Ronald Koeman’s troops in the 31st minute of the game to level the scores, but Van Persie bagged his second to stretch Man Utd’s winning streak to five games, putting them into third and placing them among the Premier League’s early season achievers.

With many now tipping Man Utd to return to the Champions League at the end of the season, some still question whether they can do so without a more solid defence and better displays.

Van Persie was the first to admit they were not at their best.

“I don’t think we played our best football today,” he said.

“We were a bit sloppy here and there. We fought hard and in the end we nicked it.”

He added: “It was a tough game. They have a good team so we knew what to expect, but I think it’s our fifth straight victory so we are on the way up.”

Spurs Aim For Fresh Double Saints Swoop – reports

Tottenham Hotspur are chasing a double Southampton swoop in the January transfer window, having lined up both French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin and his teammate Jay Rodriguez.

Ex-Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino has chased the duo heavily since being appointed manager of the north London club in the summer, replacing Tim Sherwood.

However, repeat attempts to sign both players have been unsuccessful.

The Daily Mirror is now suggesting that the White Hart Lane side are set to continue their pursuit of the duo going into the winter window.

This will, in part, be funded by a supposed £20 million transfer fund available to the Argentine manager.

Spurs have been disappointing in the Premier League, sitting in tenth after several weeks of football.

They are chasing Southampton, who headed into tonight’s clash with Manchester United in fourth place in the league, a surprising position given the pre-season predictions of relegation for Ronald Koeman’s side.

‘More Important’ Star To Shine In Man Utd Match With Schneiderlin Absent – Southampton Boss

Southampton’s battling midfielder Victor Wanyama is considered to be “more important” tonight in their match against Manchester United, according to the club’s manager Ronald Koeman.

Koeman has to deal with the absence of Morgan Schneiderlin, who also missed Southampton’s clash with Arsenal last week.

Schneiderlin is seen as an integral figure in Southampton’s play, and the club turned down a series of big money bids for the French international in the summer.

Now, however, they have to deal with his absence.

As a result, Koeman is set to rely heavily on Wanyama to push the Saints through against Man Utd.

He is expected to occupy a more defensive role in Schneiderlin’s absence, forcing him to curb his attacking instincts.

“He is an important player,” Koeman said.

“In the beginning he did well and it was difficult for him because he had a different pre-season than the rest of the players because he had to play for the national team of Kenya.

“But little by little he is taking his place in the team. He’s very strong. He wins his battle in midfield, he scores goals and that’s the difference between now and last season.

“If Morgan is not in the midfield, [Wanyama] is still more important because they have a good relation, they connect well in midfield and Victor is maybe the strongest, most physical midfielder that we have in our team.”

Wanyama moved to the south coast club in the summer from Celtic for £12.5 million.

The St. Mary’s side could move back into the top four with a win against Louis van Gaal’s big spenders.
