Manchester United are lining up a move for Zenit St Petersburg defender Ezequiel Garay, as reported by Spanish outlet fichajes.net.
The former Real Madrid defender has impressed since his move to the Russian side, who he joined for €15 million in the summer, and as a result, Louis van Gaal is keen to make his spell with Andres Villas Boas’ side a short one.
Van Gaal has reportedly identified the Argentinian international as the ideal player to fix his broken defence.
The Old Trafford club have previously targeted the likes of Mats Hummels as possible improvements, but the Borussia Dortmund defender has repeatedly declared his lack of interest at moving away from the German side.
As a result, the former Netherlands boss has reportedly decided to focus on Garay.
Van Gaal knows Garay well, having seen the ex-Benfica man knock his Dutch side out of the World Cup, converting the important penalty in the semi-final.
