Long term Arsenal target William Carvalho is set to agree a new contract with Sporting Lisbon, despite the consistent interest from the north London club in his signature in recent months, as reported by Portuguese news outlet Record.
The bruising midfielder has been regularly linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium recently, but it now seems as though he will be looking to stay at the Portuguese club for the foreseeable future.
Arsenal are thought to need a midfield enforcer like Carvalho, with their weak and imbalanced midfield thought to be a key reason behind their huge 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League earlier this week.
Despite this, Arsene Wenger’s troops put out a better display in the Premier League on Saturday, winning 3-0 away from home against the previously undefeated Aston Villa.
Wenger will surely look to improve his squad in January, given the lack of options in reserve, but it now seems Carvalho is not a possible signing going forward.
