Liverpool Skipper: Everyone Has To Be On Their Game Against Real

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has declared that the entire side has to be on their game against Real Madrid in the Champions League tonight, as reported by the Daily Star.

The former England skipper has admitted that his team are up against it ahead of tonight’s important game, and that none of the players can be passengers against last year’s winners of the Champions League.

He said: “I think every player in the dressing room realises that we can’t have any passengers against opposition like this or we will get beat convincingly.

“That applies to me personally as well.

“Everyone who is picked to play from 11 in the starting line up to the subs, everyone has to be on their game.

“We are playing against the best side in Europe and if we have two or three passengers we can get beat convincingly and it can become embarrassing against sides like this.

“They are deadly away from home on the counter attack. We need to be right on it.”

Raheem Sterling to score and Liverpool to win against Real Madrid is 9/1 with William Hill

Liverpool have struggled to put together any sort of fluidity since the start of the new season, and Sunday’s game against Queens Park Rangers spoke for their woes across the park.

Despite facing off with a side who have been poor since the start of the campaign, Liverpool were dominated for most of the opening exchanges.

They went ahead, however, but defensive frailty reared its ugly head once again.

A mad 10 minute spell saw the west London side equalise twice before Liverpool pulled off a 3-2 win through an unfortunate own goal for QPR’s Steven Caulker.

Liverpool Star Calls Kop Hero One Of Game’s Best Leaders

Jordan Henderson has declared that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is one of the best leaders in the game, as reported by the Daily Star.

Henderson has very recently been appointed as Gerrard’s vice captain at the Anfield club, and many see the dynamic midfielder as the natural successor to the one club man.

Gerrard has come under criticism in recent weeks, with some suggesting that his performances have been below par, and have contributed to a questionable start for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The Reds have not yet hit the heights of last season, when they put together a surprising title challenge, although they are now missing their talismanic striker Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona in the summer.

Henderson has come to the fore since last season, and his all action displays have won many plaudits.

He was full of praise for his captain, saying: “Stevie’s probably not only the best captain for Liverpool and before with England, but in the game itself.

“Being around him has benefited me a lot. It’s been huge. Every day I watch him. It’s his desire to improve.

“He’s been the best and most influential player here for such a long time but he still wants to get better.

“He takes training really seriously and sets the tone for how things should be. Everyone else follows.

“He does a lot of things that people on the outside don’t see. On the pitch he’s a great leader.

“You can see the goals, the passes and the tackles he makes; the way he inspires the team.

“But off the pitch he conducts himself brilliantly too. He’s a genuinely nice person and everybody in the squad knows they can go to him.

“The most important thing is he puts the team in front of everybody else including himself. The most important thing is the team.”

Gerrard retired from international football this summer after England’s disappointing display at the World Cup in Brazil.

Former Kop Hero: Criticism Of 34-Year-Old Liverpool Star Is Wrong

Former Liverpool favourite Jamie Redknapp has panned the criticism of captain Steven Gerrard, saying that the midfielder should not be blamed for the side’s indifferent start to the new season, as reported by the Daily Express.

Having conceded a late equaliser against local rivals Everton in the Premier League on Saturday, the Reds have conceded nine times in the league.

Their indifferent start has also seen them lose to the likes of Aston Villa and West Ham, and there has been significant criticism of Gerrard as a result.

While he scored an excellent free kick against Everton, there are still doubts over Gerrard’s role in the side, especially given his age. He is now 34 years old.

However, Redknapp has defended Gerrard heavily in his weekly column.

He wrote: “I had to laugh this week when people started writing Steven Gerrard off.

“Liverpool have a few bad results and all of a sudden it’s his fault? Don’t be ridiculous.

“Gerrard has bailed his team out so many times and if there is a better player who can do that job for Liverpool then I’ve yet to see him.

“Yes, he will need to be rested at times but there’s a big difference between being rested and being dropped.

“Liverpool have lost Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge has been injured, so there are reasons why they are struggling. But it’s so easy to jump on the bandwagon and say people are finished. It’s just lazy.

“Ask any professional: would you rather play Liverpool with or without Steven Gerrard? There will only be one answer.”

Gerrard himself hit back at the critics after the goal on Saturday, saying that the questions over his performances have gone too far in recent weeks.
