Liverpool Dynamo: Let’s Win FA Cup For Gerrard

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has revealed that he wants to win the FA Cup for teammate Steven Gerrard, ahead of the Anfield club’s clash with AFC Wimbledon tonight, as reported by LiverpoolFC.com.

Gerrard is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season, after a long spell of consistent first team football for the Reds.

The former England captain has never played club football for another side, something of a unique achievement in this day and age.

While he has performed consistently well throughout his career, it could be argued that he has never won as much silverware as his talents deserved.

His midfield partner, Henderson, is therefore keen to cap Gerrard’s Anfield career with another trophy and another medal.

He said: “It would be amazing to win a trophy, not only for us as a team – because I think we need something like that – but for him personally because he deserves something like that for how good he’s been over so many years for Liverpool.”

Henderson is also keen for the side to repeat Wembley feats of the past, which includes a League Cup victory during Henderson’s first season with the Merseyside club.

“In my first year here, we won the Carling Cup, which was brilliant,” Henderson told BBC Football Focus. “Then we got to the final of the FA Cup by beating Everton at Wembley but we lost to Chelsea, which was hard to take.

“I’ve experienced it before and it’s amazing to get to the semi-finals or the finals and experience playing at Wembley in front of the fans. It’s brilliant. I think it’s one of the best days of my career so far, winning my first trophy for Liverpool. So hopefully we can get a few more.

“It’s a massive cup competition that everybody wants to win and I think that goes for any trophy really. Any competition that you are in, you want to win every game and be at the end and win in the final.”

Liverpool Icon To Be Tempted By Lucrative Offer – reports

New York Red Bulls are set to offer a lucrative deal to Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, if he turns down a new contract with the Reds.

Gerrard’s future has been the subject of significant speculation in recent weeks, with contract negotiations beginning as Brendan Rodgers chose to leave him out of the first team during a few fixtures this campaign.

The Major League Soccer team have included the former England captain on their ‘discovery list’, which details any future or possible acquisitions, and would also mean that the New York side would have a priority on Gerrard ahead of other teams in the league.

This could be significant, given that NYRB are now competing with New York City FC, Manchester City’s sister club, for support in the Big Apple.

The Sunday Telegraph are also reporting that they are hoping to exploit Gerrard’s good relationship with Gerard Houllier, who is the MLS side’s sporting director.

Gerrard’s contract runs out at the end of the current season but he has been offered fresh terms.

That two year deal involves a pay cut, however, and Gerrard is therefore considering his other options.

Liverpool Left ‘Special’ Player On Bench – Sunderland Boss

Sunderland manager Gustavo Poyet has claimed that Liverpool left their “special” player Steven Gerrard on the bench in their clash on Saturday.

Gerrard’s continued place in the Liverpool first team has been under debate in recent months.

Despite contributing heavily to the Anfield club’s title charge in the later stages of last season, he was also somewhat responsible for the ultimate failure of that quest.

Gerrard infamously slipped against Chelsea, giving them the opportunity to grab a lead that Liverpool could never take away from them, and Brendan Rodgers’ side ultimately lost that game 2-0.

Had Liverpool managed a draw in that game and then not collapsed against Crystal Palace while chasing a huge goal difference busting win, they would have won the title.

However, Poyet himself says that Sunderland did significant preparation on how to deal with Gerrard, and were surprised to see such a special player left on the bench for the game.

“We watched on video, Gerrard playing in front of the back four and Gerrard playing off the front,” Poyet said.

“Then he wasn’t playing. So I suppose a few players in there said ‘yeah, well done gaffer’ — all that video for no reason. But it’s good — you play against a top team, one of those players is special, you show your team, and he doesn’t play.”
