Manchester United’s record breaking signing Angel Di Maria has told Louis van Gaal to capture Benfica midfielder and Argentinian compatriot Nicolas Gaitan in the January transfer window.
Di Maria is thought to be hopeful of convincing the Man Utd manager that Gaitan is worth going all out for when the winter window rolls around.
This is according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, which believes that the £59.7 million man is pushing for the addition of a former teammate.
Van Gaal is thought to be able to spend up to £30 million next month in an attempt to improve his squad, according to reports, and Di Maria feels Gaitan is the ideal player to improve the side and mount a serious title challenge.
While Gaitan only agreed a new deal with Benfica last month, tying him down for five years, the contract includes a £27.5 million release clause which Man Utd could exploit.
Manchester United are set to carry out a double raid of Benfica in the January transfer window, capturing both Enzo Perez and Nicolas Gaitan in the process.
This will come as a shock, with Perez reportedly set to join Valencia as of yesterday.
Reports in Portugal are now suggesting, however, that the Old Trafford club are set to get their man, and also bring a teammate from Portugal with him to Manchester.
The double swoop is expected to cost Louis van Gaal’s side a grand total of £51 million, a staggering sum, according to the Daily Star.
This suggests that there will be funds available for Van Gaal to spend in January, after an extensive summer spend that saw Man Utd assemble the most expensive squad in Premier League history.
Man Utd were held to a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa on Saturday, ending their run of six wins in a row in the Premier League.
Man Utd could do with more options in midfield, and Gaitan would be ideal for that. Benfica’s relationship with Peter Lim’s Valencia might make this one difficult.
Manchester United are preparing a huge £28 million bid for Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, as reported by the Daily Star.
The attacking midfielder has impressed since joining Benfica from Argentine side Boca Juniors in 2010, and as a result, has been consistently linked with a switch to Premier League sides in recent seasons.
Chelsea were thought to be targeting a move for the Argentinian attacking midfielder in the near future, but it now seems as though Man Utd have reentered the race for the star.
They were consistently linked with a move for him in the summer, but their attentions turned to record breaking signing Angel Di Maria towards the end of the transfer window.
However, recent reports now suggest that Louis van Gaal, Man Utd’s manager, has reinvigorated the move for Gaitan, hoping him to bring him to the club in the near future.
He is willing to spend a huge £28 million to bring him in.
