Liverpool Hero Hails £16m Hot Shot After CL Win

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has hailed Mario Balotelli after his club’s late 2-1 win against Ludogorets in the Champions League, and believes the Italian international striker can help his club reach new heights, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

Gerrard was the hero in the clash with the Bulgarian champions, as he converted from the spot in the dying moments of the game to kick Liverpool’s return to the Champions League off on the right note.

It was the first game that the English giants have played in the competition since 2009.

Having struggled to break down their opponents, Balotelli ultimately broke the deadlock for his new side. It was, however, his work rate that Gerrard took time out to praise.

Gerrard said: “A lot of people were wondering what we were going to see from Mario in terms of off-the-ball and work-rate, what he gives us off the ball.

“But we saw tonight how hard he worked. You have got to give Mario immense credit. When you try to find a breakthrough, you keep going – which is what he did. Great strikers only need one chance and he took it.”

Balotelli joined the Merseyside club towards the end of the transfer window, signing for them from the club he supports, AC Milan, for only £16 million.

Elsewhere in their group, Real Madrid secured a huge win against Basel.

Ex-Chelsea Strike Sensation: £16m Liverpool Star Too “Inconsistent”

Former Chelsea and AC Milan striker Hernan Crespo has warned Liverpool that the club have signed a player who is too inconsistent in front of goal, and that the club should not expect too much from him in the coming season, as reported by the Daily Star.

Brendan Rodgers, after significant consideration over a large segment of the summer transfer window, decided to replace departed striker Luis Suarez with Balotelli, who cost the Merseyside club £16 million.

Despite having returned to his boyhood club AC Milan from Manchester City only a year and a half ago, Balotelli was keen on a move away from the Italian giants this summer.

His record at Milan is quite impressive, with the striker having scored 30 goals in only 54 appearances for the club.

Despite this, Crespo is of the opinion that the player will never become a 25 goal a season forward, as a result of the inconsistency in his play.

He said: “People’s judgments about [Balotelli] really come down to what expectations you have.

“If you think he’s going to score 25 goals a season, then you’ve got it all wrong.

“He’s never had that consistency. He can decide a game with one amazing moment, but you can’t ask him to do it all the time.”

Rodgers – £48m Liverpool Trio Will Enjoy Anfield Atmosphere

Brendan Rodgers has stated that newly signed Liverpool trio Lazar Markovic, Mario Balotelli and Alberto Moreno will gain a lot from being able to sample the Anfield atmosphere tomorrow when the club face Aston Villa at home, as reported by the Daily Star.

Italian international Balotelli moved to Liverpool towards the end of the transfer window from AC Milan for a cut price fee of only £16 million. Despite questions over his attitude and his willingness to apply himself as a result, there is a belief that the cost was far less than he is actually worth.

Moreno, who joined Liverpool from Europa League winners Sevilla, was part of an extended saga during the summer transfer window, which required significant negotiations between the Anfield club and the La Liga side. He ultimately joined Liverpool for £12 million.

Markovic is regarded as one of the hottest young talents in Europe, and Liverpool secured his signature from Benfica for £20 million.

With all three potentially available for tomorrow, Rodgers feels playing at Anfield for the first time will be an exciting moment for them.

Rodgers said: “It’ll be brilliant for them.

“It’ll be great for them to sample the support and playing in that cauldron of Anfield.

“It’s a special place to play football – it certainly is to manage. I know the players are looking forward to that.”
