Liverpool Dynamo: We Need To Be A Top Team Like Real

Liverpool’s midfield dynamo Jordan Henderson has said, after last night’s 3-0 demolition, that the Reds are aiming to become a top team like Real Madrid, as reported by the Daily Star.

The Santiago Bernabeu club were under the cosh for the opening 20 minutes of the game against the Anfield side, but after scoring, tore Liverpool open repeatedly and were 3-0 up before the break.

While Liverpool did improve in the second half, they never truly looked like scoring against Carlo Ancelotti’s side, and the gulf in quality between the two sides was obvious.

Despite having lost Gareth Bale to injury, Ancelotti could still call on the likes of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, Isco and James Rodriguez to make up a powerful attacking unit, and the contrast with Liverpool was obvious.

Brendan Rodgers chose to sub Mario Balotelli off at half time after an indifferent first period, and sent on Adam Lallana in his place, with Rickie Lambert the only conventional striker available to him in reserve.

Henderson said: “This Real Madrid team is top class with the best players in the world but that’s who you want to be playing against and testing yourself, always trying to improve ourselves as a team.

“That’s where we want to get to – to be a top team like Madrid playing at the highest level and I think we can do that.

“The first 20 minutes I felt as though we had a right good go and got in behind them a couple of times.

“We had a couple of half-chances to get a goal and then you never know but we just need to be a bit more ruthless in the final third.

“When you are on top you need to put your chances away.

“Hopefully we can keep improving and work on the things we didn’t do quite so well.”

Liverpool Star Reacts To Balotelli Shirt Swapping Controversy

Liverpool star Jordan Henderson has reacted to the shirt swapping controversy currently enveloping Mario Balotelli, suggesting that no one in the dressing room has even discussed it, as reported by the Daily Star.

Liverpool collapsed to a 3-0 loss against Real Madrid in the Champions League last night, and were losing by that scoreline by the time the interval came around.

Balotelli was later shown to have swapped shirts with Real star Pepe at half time, something that people have suggested is a sign of a poor attitude from the Italian international.

However, vice captain Henderson is of the belief that it wasn’t a topic of discussion in the dressing room at any point yesterday.

Henderson said: “It hasn’t been discussed in the dressing room.

“I don’t think anyone knew he had even done it. It’s certainly the first I’ve heard of it.”

The Italian international has struggled to settle since his £16 million move to Anfield during the summer transfer window.

In comparison with former Reds hitman Luis Suarez, he has looked disinterested at times, and repeatedly missed opportunities against Queens Park Rangers at the weekend when it looked easier to score.

Liverpool Star Calls Kop Hero One Of Game’s Best Leaders

Jordan Henderson has declared that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is one of the best leaders in the game, as reported by the Daily Star.

Henderson has very recently been appointed as Gerrard’s vice captain at the Anfield club, and many see the dynamic midfielder as the natural successor to the one club man.

Gerrard has come under criticism in recent weeks, with some suggesting that his performances have been below par, and have contributed to a questionable start for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The Reds have not yet hit the heights of last season, when they put together a surprising title challenge, although they are now missing their talismanic striker Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona in the summer.

Henderson has come to the fore since last season, and his all action displays have won many plaudits.

He was full of praise for his captain, saying: “Stevie’s probably not only the best captain for Liverpool and before with England, but in the game itself.

“Being around him has benefited me a lot. It’s been huge. Every day I watch him. It’s his desire to improve.

“He’s been the best and most influential player here for such a long time but he still wants to get better.

“He takes training really seriously and sets the tone for how things should be. Everyone else follows.

“He does a lot of things that people on the outside don’t see. On the pitch he’s a great leader.

“You can see the goals, the passes and the tackles he makes; the way he inspires the team.

“But off the pitch he conducts himself brilliantly too. He’s a genuinely nice person and everybody in the squad knows they can go to him.

“The most important thing is he puts the team in front of everybody else including himself. The most important thing is the team.”

Gerrard retired from international football this summer after England’s disappointing display at the World Cup in Brazil.
