Man Utd Eye Up £18m Spurs Swoop – reports

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen, with the hopes of bringing him into the club in January, as reported by the Daily Star.

Dutch manager Louis van Gaal is incredibly keen to bring in new defenders in January, with his current crop of stars struggling with suspensions and injuries since the start of the season.

While Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels heads the pile of possible targets for the Old Trafford club, the German giants are only willing to let the World Cup winner depart if they receive a huge £47 million bid for the elegant centre back.

Man Utd remain interested in possibly beating the British record transfer fee for a defender by making a bid, but have looked to other targets as alternative.

One of these is Vertonghen, who is reportedly unsettled at the White Hart Lane club.

He was left on the bench during their 2-1 loss to Stoke prior to the international break.

Man Utd could make an £18 million bid for the star.

Huge Blow As 27-Year-Old Spurs Star Refuses To Sign New Deal

Tottenham Hotspur have been hit with a huge blow after Jan Vertonghen revealed that he will not be signing a new contract with the White Hart Lane club in the near future, as reported by The Guardian.

However, Vertonghen has still insisted that he is very happy at the club.

Vertonghen said: “I am not signing, no.

“We agreed not to.

“I would prefer not to say why. I still have four years left. I am happy at the club and I think they are happy with me. That’s where it ends.

“I am very happy, we have a good manager, we have a good team and a lot of good players.

“The squad is very big and you have to work hard to play every game and I hope I am playing again soon.”

Given that only two weeks ago Mustapha Nakhli, his agent, stated that the club and the Belgian international defender were close to agreeing a new contract, Spurs fans will look at the news with some fear.

The 27 year old defender’s representative had suggested at the time that the new deal was on the basis that Spurs would be qualifying for the Champions League at the end of this season.

Given their indifferent form since, this could have impacted on Vertonghen’s thought process regarding agreeing a new long term deal.

Spurs have signed Danny Rose, Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane to new deals since the end of last season.

27-Year-Old Spurs Star On Cusp Of New Deal But Wants CL Football

Tottenham Hotspur star Jan Vertonghen is on the cusp of agreeing a new deal with the north London club, despite a raft of speculation this summer linking him with other clubs around the world, as reported by the Daily Mail.

However, his agent has clarified that the player is signing the contract on the assumption that the club will soon manage Champions League football again, something that will surely worry Spurs fans about his long term commitment levels.

Despite having moved to Spurs in 2012 for £11m, Vertonghen has never played in Europe’s elite competition with the London club, and has had to settle for the Europa League.

The club are clearly hopeful that a new contract can convince him to stay at the club for the immediate future, especially if they offer him improved terms on his current deal, which runs until 2018, already a long commitment.

Vertonghen’s agent has, however, said that the player is confident the side will finish in the top four this season.

He said: “We have spoken to Daniel Levy about a new contract for Jan and the negotiations were very good – we hope to sort everything out very soon.

“He is happy at Tottenham and wants to play for the club. He wants to play Champions League with Tottenham and he has a very good feeling about the new manager.

“Last year they made many changes and brought in many new players and it was not so good, but this season it is possible for Tottenham to qualify for the Champions League.”
