Liverpool Told To Forget £23.5m Ace And Sign £32m Higuain Or Lavezzi

Liverpool hero Phil Thompson has told Brendan Rodgers to forget about signing West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino in the January transfer window, as reported by the Daily Star.

Instead, Thompson is keen to see his old club spend their cash on Argentinian international and Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain or Paris Saint Germain’s unsettled forward Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Both players are thought to be keen on transfers away from their current sides, despite only joining them in the near past.

Lavezzi was recently fined by manager Laurent Blanc for failing to return to training, and he could see his playing time cut even further as a result.

Higuain has been dropped to the bench as a result of poor form, having moved to Napoli in 2013 for £32m.

Berahino has had his attitude questioned in recent days, having celebrated in a protesting manner after scoring for West Brom in the FA Cup at the weekend, suggesting he wants out.

Thompson said: “I would not like to think that Saido Berahino is their prime target as a striker.

“Yes, Liverpool do need a striker with injuries to Daniel Sturridge and the difficulties that Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli have had at the football club.

“Brendan Rodgers likes his forwards to have pace. You see Raheem Sterling currently playing as an out-and-out centre forward, and he has done very well, but maybe he does not possess the finishing quality of Berahino.

“I think that Liverpool need someone who is a bit more established and who has played at a higher level like Gonzalo Higuain or Ezequiel Lavezzi, somebody of that ilk to come in following the news about Steven Gerrard’s departure.

“For me, I would not go for Berahino, although I can see the advantages of having him, but I tell you what, he has to change his attitude.”

Liverpool Look To Sign €30M Ace During January – reports

Liverpool are reportedly keen to bring long term target Ezequiel Lavezzi into the club during the winter window, as reported by fichajes.net.

Lavezzi has been consistently targeted by the Anfield club since the summer months, although a move for the player never came to fruition before the season kicked off.

However, Liverpool’s iffy start to the season means that Brendan Rodgers will likely dip back into the transfer market during the winter window, with forward recruits his priority.

The Reds are still struggling to deal with the departure of Luis Suarez during the transfer window, with the Uruguayan striker proving almost irreplaceable, despite some money being spent on new forward options.

Mario Balotelli was brought in from AC Milan for £16 million towards the end of the window, but the Italian international has failed to impress.

Lavezzi is not a guaranteed starter for Paris Saint Germain, and with the right bid, Liverpool could almost certainly bring him in.

Liverpool In Pole Position For £21.1m Title Winner After Contract Fallout – reports

Liverpool have found themselves in an ideal position to revive their interest in Paris Saint Germain star Ezequiel Lavezzi, after it was revealed that the star’s lack of games for the French giants meant it was unlikely that he would sign a new deal with the Ligue 1 champions, as reported by the Daily Express.

With his deal set to expire at the end of next season, PSG are loathe to lose the player on a free transfer in a year and a half, knowing how difficult it would be to get him to agree to a new deal.

Lavezzi’s situation around his playing time is unlikely to improve any time soon, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani having finally settled into a formidable strike partnership after an unimpressive first season as a duo.

This means that any club looking to buy him could capture him for far less than the €26.5 million (£21.1 million) PSG paid.

Liverpool are known to be interested in the player, although they would face competition from the likes of Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina and Inter Milan in their quest to bring him to Anfield.
