Confirmed: Arsenal Snap Up World Cup Hero

Arsenal have today confirmed the signing of Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina on a long-term deal, as reported by the BBC.

Ospina was a genuine World Cup hero this summer, aiding in his side’s spectacular efforts which saw them reach the quarter-finals in the tournament, only to be eliminated on penalties by the hosts Brazil. Ospina was one of two stars in the side, along with new Real Madrid signing James Rodriguez.

The Colombian keeper signed for French Ligue 1 side Nice in 2008 and played 177 games for them, replacing Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris in the process. He had previously played for Atletico National, becoming their starting goalkeeper in the Colombian league at the age of only 17, making 97 appearances for them.

Arsene Wenger said: “David is an excellent goalkeeper. He will add strength to our squad and we are very pleased that he will be joining us.

“He has good experience and a proven record of performing.”

Arsenal manager Wenger has implied in the past that Ospina, who will probably begin his pre-season at the Emirates Cup tournament, may end up becoming Arsenal’s main goalkeeper, with questions remaining over Wojciech Szczesny’s ability and concentration levels.

Arsenal Boss Confirms Expected Arrival Of World Cup Hero

Arsene Wenger has seemingly confirmed the arrival of World Cup goalkeeping hero David Ospina in an interview, as reported by ESPN.com.

Ospina would become The Gunners’ third signing of the summer, after the arrival of Chilean international Alexis Sanchez, and French defender Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United. All three had impressive World Cups, with both Sanchez and Debuchy also integral to their side’s successes at the competition.

Wenger also confirmed in the interview that Arsenal were now on an equal financial footing with their Premier League rivals after years of paying off their debts surrounding the Emirates Stadium.

Regarding Ospina, Wenger said: “You know at the start Szczensy will be the No. 1, then again we’ll be down to performances and, if Ospina shows that he is better, he will play.”

Arsenal have also been heavily linked to Sami Khedira this summer, with word that the German international midfielder may join the north London club. Lukas Podolski has encouraged Khedira to join Arsenal, but word about his excessive wage demands scuppering any potential deal has been maintained.

Wenger and Arsenal face off with the New York Red Bulls in the coming days, featuring former Arsenal great Thierry Henry.
