Arsene Wenger Credits Divine Intervention For £16m Arsenal Signing

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that were it not for the invitation of the Pope to referee a charity match on deadline day, the north London club would not have agreed a £16 million deal to bring him to the Emirates Stadium at the end of the transfer window, as reported by the Daily Star.

Welbeck’s move to Arsenal was confirmed in swift fashion on the final day of the window, with Wenger busy in Rome, refereeing a charity game that had been arranged by Pope Francis.

Had it not been for his absence, Wenger would have only looked for a season long loan deal for the former Manchester United striker, with the club intending to secure an option to buy him at the end of the season.

With Spurs also sniffing around Welbeck, there is no guarantee that Arsenal would have managed to secure the striker. Welbeck showed his talent on Monday by scoring two goals for the England national side.

Wenger said: “If I had not travelled that day, Welbeck would not be here. I’ll explain that a bit later.

“If I stayed at home, Welbeck would not be here today. That’s the truth.”

“Meeting the Pope was an experience I did not want to miss.

“I am a Catholic and it was an invitation I accepted a long time ago and on top of that it was a game for peace and multi-religion understanding.

“He is a great person to meet because he shows humility and is available to meet for everybody.

“He is a supporter of San Lorenzo in Argentina. He is a football fan. You cannot be born in Argentina and not be a football fan.”

Ex-Boss: £16m Arsenal New Boy Never Did Enough For Man Utd

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has declared in his press conference yesterday that new Arsenal signing Danny Welbeck has never done enough to convince him that he was good enough to keep a place in the Old Trafford club’s squad going forward, as reported by the Daily Express.

With Welbeck having scored two goals for England on Monday, many have questioned the logic of Van Gaal allowing a homegrown youngster to depart the club for what is thought to be a cut price fee, £16 million. Welbeck’s brace against Switzerland gave England a 2-0 win in their first Euro 2016 qualifying match.

He also joined a side that would be considered to be a direct rival to Man Utd for a Champions League place, Arsenal.

There has been criticism from a series of Man Utd luminaries, with the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville questioning the club’s transfer policy during the most recent window. Ferdinand, who faces them with QPR this weekend, went as far as to brand the club as “mad”.

Van Gaal, however, said: “I’ve given all the players the chance to convince me of their qualities.

“When you ask about Danny Welbeck, he was here from when he was nine and after Sunderland, he plays three seasons at Manchester United but he doesn’t have the record of Van Persie or Rooney and that’s the standard.

“That’s why we let him go.

23-Year-Old Arsenal Star Wants To Be Club’s Main Man

Arsenal’s new £16 million signing Danny Welbeck has stated that he wants to be the club’s main man after his deadline day switch from Manchester United, as reported by Goal.com.

Having failed to secure a berth for himself as a central striker during his time at Old Trafford, he impressed heavily in the role for England on Monday night, scoring twice as the Three Lions won 2-0 against Switzerland in Basel.

He now believes he has the capacity to be the central striker at the Emirates Stadium.

The striker said: “It is well known I prefer to play through the middle so when I get my opportunity I just want to show what I can do.

“Once I get into the box and am getting the chances, I have got faith in my ability.

“Before, I wasn’t getting into the box because I wasn’t playing too much as a striker, and I had to worry about my defensive work.”

Welbeck is expected to start for Arsenal against Premier League winners Manchester City at the weekend, making his debut for the north London club against a team from the city where he began his professional career.

Having played well for England earlier this week, there will be many Arsenal fans who are excited to see their newest charge pull on their shirt and play for the first time.
