Fallen Arsenal Star Backs £16m Replacement To Impress During Absence

Arsenal’s injured right back Mathieu Debuchy has backed young England international Calum Chambers to fill in with aplomb during his extended absence from first team action, as reported by the Daily Star.

Debuchy injured himself during Arsenal’s game with Manchester City at the weekend, which the Gunners drew 2-2 against the defending Premier League champions, and the French international is expected to face an extended spell on the sidelines, with reports suggesting that he will be absent for between two or three months of the season.

Chambers, 19, has impressed since arriving at the Emirates Stadium from Southampton for £16m, and began his professional career playing at right back for the south coast club. He has been used in a more central role for Arsenal by Arsene Wenger, but would be the natural replacement in Arsenal’s squad for the injured Debuchy.

The former Newcastle United defender has also backed the young star to impress during his absence.

He said: “Calum is a very good player, he is very young and has a great potential.

“He proved himself since the beginning of the season, when he performed very well.

“He is very talented and will bring a lot to Arsenal.”

Confirmed: Arsenal Snap Up £11 Million Dynamic Defender

Southampton have confirmed on their official Twitter feed that Calum Chambers has moved to Arsenal, symbolising their second departure in as many days.

The full-back was first linked with a move to the Gunners on Friday, with reports that he had undergone a medical with the north London side suggesting that a move was imminent.

Chambers is the second full-back to leave Southampton this summer, with former teammate Luke Shaw having joined Manchester United. Other departures from St. Mary’s this summer include Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert. Arsenal are also reportedly interested signing Morgan Schneiderlin from the south coast club.

This represents Arsenal’s fourth foray into the transfer market this summer, with them having already signed Alexis Sanchez, fellow right-back Mathieu Debuchy, and David Ospina, who impressed heavily at this summer’s World Cup for Colombia.

The transfer fee has been reported at around £11 million for the talented youngster, a significant outlay for a player who has played little Premier League football, but one that Arsene Wenger has clearly deemed worth the risk.

Reports: Wonderkid Wing-Back Has Medical At Arsenal After Fee Agreed With Southampton

David Ornstein of the BBC has suggested that Southampton’s Calum Chambers has had a medical with Arsenal today after a fee was agreed between the north London club and Ronald Koeman’s new side.

Chambers would be the second right-back addition of the summer by Arsene Wenger’s side after they confirmed the signing of Mathieu Debuchy last week. The French international replaced Bacary Sagna, who left Arsenal on a free transfer at the end of last season to join Manchester City.

Arsenal have been exceptionally active in the transfer market thus far this summer, with Alexis Sanchez the club’s first addition. David Ospina, who impressed so heavily at the World Cup this summer, is also reported to be joining the Emirates Stadium club in the near future.

The addition of Chambers would be a real coup for the side, given the fact he is considered one of the more talented young full-backs in the country.
