Liverpool Boss Praises Controversial Real Selection

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has praised the players that he controversially selected for the clash against Real Madrid in the Champions League last night, as reported by the Daily Star.

Rodgers is believed to have rested a series of players in the game, but has now hinted that it might be more difficult for his perceived first team players to get back into the first team after last night’s display.

Despite the fact that the Reds lost the clash against the Spanish giants, the 1-0 result was far better than expected, given their recent poor form, and has seen many in the media react positively to Rodgers’s selection for the game.

As a result, Rodgers has insisted that his star players will not necessarily be back in the first team at the weekend.

He also praised the players that he did choose to play against the current holders of the Champions League.

He said: “Kolo Toure was outstanding, so was Lucas in the controlling role and Emre Can was excellent, so was Adam Lallana and Fabio Borini and Lazar Markovic.

“It might have seemed a gamble, but for me it was not. We are disappointed with the result.

“We have not been consistent enough to have guaranteed starters. I had to change the team after the performance against Newcastle. I have to show trust as a coach and a manager and now we have to be focused on our next game against Chelsea and pick a team to win that one.”

Liverpool Boss Hits Back At Everton Hero’s Criticism

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has responded angrily to the criticism levelled at him by Gary Lineker over his team selection against Real Madrid last night, as reported by the Daily Star.

Rodgers named a perceived weakened eleven for the match against the Spanish giants, and some, including Lineker, questioned the sensibility of seemingly giving up on the opportunity to win against Real in the Champions League.

Liverpool ultimately lost the away clash 1-0.

The likes of Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli were all left on the bench for the game.

However, Rodgers has justified his selection to the press, despite BBC pundit and former Everton star Lineker claiming that the Reds had thrown in the towel ahead of the match.

Rodgers has also hit back at Lineker after seeing his team play well against Los Blancos, saying: “Gary’s a figure who I respect and he’s been a top player in his day.

“But he has never been a manager, so he does not know what you’re up against with planning and training.

“This was far from us throwing in the white towel. Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in every one of his last 12 games, so my players put in a performance that did befit this club. In terms of my team selection, I’m not really bothered. I go with my gut feeling and my gut feeling was that the performance on Saturday [a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle] was not good enough.

“We have seven games in 21 days and because we cannot train so much we have to develop in the games. I did not see this as the big showpiece game where we have to play the big names.”

The Reds face a difficult clash at the weekend, facing off against west London side Chelsea.

Liverpool Boss To Players: Make Yourselves Legends Tonight

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told his players to make themselves legends in tonight’s clash with Real Madrid, as reported by the Daily Star.

The Reds face the Spanish giants in the Champions League, having struggled to put together any consistent form since the start of the new season.

The game against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday spoke for the rest of the season, with defensive frailties almost costing them an important three points.

They also lacked the attacking fluidity of last season, when the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez tended to make up for their consistent woes at the back by outscoring the opposition.

Rodgers has, however, called on the current flock to cement their place in the history books by defeating last year’s Champions League winners.

Raheem Sterling to score and Liverpool to win is 9/1 with William Hill

Rodgers is also confident that his players can step up against Real, and as a result, does not fear Los Blancos.

He said: “These are the types of games that are talked about for years.

“Stevie’s two goals in the last game against them are still talked about.

“We are going into the game after being up and down.

“But underpinning all the great performances last season was the spirit and character in the group and that will serve them well at the moment.

“They can go into the game to get a result for the team and what can come from that is a legendary status.”
