Arsenal are set to beat their fierce rivals Chelsea in the race for Spanish international star Alvaro Arbeloa, with the north London club set to make a January move for the player in an attempt to fix their defensive crisis, as reported by the Daily Express.
Both Chelsea and Arsenal have been linked with the former Liverpool star, who is expected to leave Real Madrid after losing his place in the club’s first eleven.
Reports in his homeland of Spain are now suggesting that current Real manager Carlo Ancelotti has told the veteran defender that he is free to leave the club during the upcoming winter window.
With Mathieu Debuchy having suffered a serious injury in the club’s clash with Manchester City, the Emirates Stadium club need another right back, and they are set to turn to Arbeloa to fill that hole.
While Jose Mourinho worked with Arbeloa before, it seems Arsenal have now won the chase for his signature.
Former Liverpool star Alvaro Arbeloa is set to leave Real Madrid in January, having lost his place to youngster Dani Carvajal, and Chelsea are one of several clubs reportedly keen on bringing him to the Premier League as a result, as reported by the Daily Express.
Reports in Spain are suggesting that Real are on the cusp of putting together a new deal to keep Carvajal at the club for a longer period of time, and with Arbeloa having lost his place in the side to the 22-year-old, he will be allowed to leave.
Along with Chelsea, Arsenal are also said to be interested in bringing the highly experienced defender in.
However, Jose Mourinho has worked with Arbeloa before, and it is said that the Spanish defender would be keen to work with him again.
Arbeloa was part of the Madrid squad that won the Champions League and the Copa del Rey last season, with Carlo Ancelotti performing well in his first season at the Spanish giants.
Arsenal and Liverpool are reportedly set to do battle for Real Madrid full-back Alvaro Arbeloa after the ex-Spanish international declared his desire to move back to the Premier League, as reported by the Daily Star.
Arsenal are reportedly the more keen side for Arbeloa’s signature. The former Liverpool man has fallen down the pecking order under Carlo Ancelotti, who prefers Dani Carvajal. Arbeloa would find himself a squad player if he remained at the Santiago Bernabeu.
While Arbeloa would prefer to stay at Madrid and sign a new contract, he is prioritising first team football at this point in his career.
Marca have said that Jose Mourinho is interested in taking him back to Chelsea, but he has also been linked with a move back to Liverpool, who he previously spent two and a half years with. Arbeloa reportedly enjoyed his time in the Premier League significantly.
Arbeloa was left out of Spain’s World Cup squad and announced his international retirement as a result.
