Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has revealed that he was delighted to finally play alongside his teammate Alexis Sanchez in the FA Cup clash with Hull City on Sunday.
The Gunners romped to a 2-0 victory against Steve Bruce’s beleaguered Hull side in a repeat of last year’s final.
Walcott made his return from a long spell on the sidelines, exactly 365 days after his last game for the north London side, which was in the same competition against local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
During that time, he missed out on a World Cup with England and an FA Cup final win with his club side.
However, he was immediately keen to heap praise on Sanchez, who has scored 16 goals since arriving at Arsenal from Barcelona in the summer.
Walcott told the press: “Alexis is a special player, so it’s nice to get on the pitch with him finally.”
Sanchez had a key role in the win on Sunday, setting up Per Mertesacker’s opening goal from a corner kick, before bagging himself to secure the win for Arsenal.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that he was tempted to rest his side’s £35 million goalscoring ace Alexis Sanchez in the clash with Hull City.
However, he then told the press that the Chilean international was keen to play in the game, and therefore he had no fears about playing him.
Sanchez has played an incredible amount of football since moving to the Emirates Stadium from Barcelona in the summer.
He has started in an exceptional 28 of Arsenal’s 31 matches this season, and also made a substitute appearance against rivals Tottenham Hotspur in October.
His last rest came against Galatasaray in the Champions League, and since then he has played nearly every minute of football that Arsenal have had.
However, the 26 year old has proven himself to be up to the task, with Arsenal’s fitness tests showing that he is capable of playing that much football.
Wenger was tempted to rest him, but decided against it, and was rewarded in the goal he scored against Hull in a repeat of last year’s final.
“He always wants to play and that is what you want to see,” Wenger said.
“You look at the players who have that confidence and you are torn between when a player is that confident to keep him on playing or give him a rest.
“But when the players are confident it is important to keep them going, especially when they have that physical potential.
“Sanchez recovers very quickly and he doesn’t look in our tests to have any fatigue problem.”
Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez has declared that the side can win any competition that they are involved in, having been impressed with the quality of his teammates since joining the club, as reported by the Daily Star.
The Chilean international made the move to north London in the summer for £32 million, and his arrival was meant to herald the fact that Arsenal could feature towards the top end of the table going forward.
However, while Sanchez himself has been impressive on the pitch, those around him have often faltered in important positions.
The former Barcelona man has driven the Gunners to goals and results, but, in the case of many matches, Arsenal have gone on to collapse and undo Sanchez’s handiwork.
This has not disheartened the Chilean, however, and he believes that his teammates are capable of achieving going forward, with the player thinking that silverware is only around the corner.
He said: “Now that I am here, sometimes I stop to look my team-mates during the training session and I realise that I am surrounded by a lot of quality stars
“I have been impressed by their attitude and their talent.
“I love how they create spaces, their individual and collective movements.
“I tell you seriously: I like what I see so much that I have repeated myself many times, that if we have the required winning mentality, if we are positive and try to win every single game, I know we can win any competition.
“I know that with this team we can win many trophies in the coming years. I am convinced.
“I hope to win everything here. That’s why I came.”
