Liverpool Told To Forget £23.5m Ace And Sign £32m Higuain Or Lavezzi

Liverpool hero Phil Thompson has told Brendan Rodgers to forget about signing West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino in the January transfer window, as reported by the Daily Star.

Instead, Thompson is keen to see his old club spend their cash on Argentinian international and Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain or Paris Saint Germain’s unsettled forward Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Both players are thought to be keen on transfers away from their current sides, despite only joining them in the near past.

Lavezzi was recently fined by manager Laurent Blanc for failing to return to training, and he could see his playing time cut even further as a result.

Higuain has been dropped to the bench as a result of poor form, having moved to Napoli in 2013 for £32m.

Berahino has had his attitude questioned in recent days, having celebrated in a protesting manner after scoring for West Brom in the FA Cup at the weekend, suggesting he wants out.

Thompson said: “I would not like to think that Saido Berahino is their prime target as a striker.

“Yes, Liverpool do need a striker with injuries to Daniel Sturridge and the difficulties that Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli have had at the football club.

“Brendan Rodgers likes his forwards to have pace. You see Raheem Sterling currently playing as an out-and-out centre forward, and he has done very well, but maybe he does not possess the finishing quality of Berahino.

“I think that Liverpool need someone who is a bit more established and who has played at a higher level like Gonzalo Higuain or Ezequiel Lavezzi, somebody of that ilk to come in following the news about Steven Gerrard’s departure.

“For me, I would not go for Berahino, although I can see the advantages of having him, but I tell you what, he has to change his attitude.”
