Arsenal Scout £15m Central Defence Ace – reports

Arsenal are set to move for Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes in an attempt to fix their broken defence.

The Gunners have been roundly criticised for their defensive displays this season, with many believing that their defence is, in part, at fault for their current league position, which sees them sat in sixth.

It has arguably been a long running problem for the Emirates Stadium club.

But injuries have been particularly problematic this season, with the likes of Mathieu Debuchy and Laurent Koscielny, both first choices, being ruled out for large swathes of the campaign.

As a result, they have turned to Howedes to fix the defensive unit, according to the Sunday People.

The north London side scouted Howedes as he helped Schalke beat Stuttgart 4-0 last weekend.

The 26 year old has two years left on his contract, but he is known to be a friend of Per Mertesacker’s, and his versatility is thought to appeal to Wenger, given the number of injuries suffered by his side.

Howedes is comfortable at both left back and centre back and would command a fee of around £15 million, which the Gunners would be able to pay.

  1. Howedes should oust Mertesacker from the starting XI and form a partnership with Koscielny.

For 15m, he will be a great capture, also capable of playing LB as he played there for Germany in the World Cup and was highly effective.
