Man Utd Eye Up £18m Spurs Swoop – reports

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen, with the hopes of bringing him into the club in January, as reported by the Daily Star.

Dutch manager Louis van Gaal is incredibly keen to bring in new defenders in January, with his current crop of stars struggling with suspensions and injuries since the start of the season.

While Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels heads the pile of possible targets for the Old Trafford club, the German giants are only willing to let the World Cup winner depart if they receive a huge £47 million bid for the elegant centre back.

Man Utd remain interested in possibly beating the British record transfer fee for a defender by making a bid, but have looked to other targets as alternative.

One of these is Vertonghen, who is reportedly unsettled at the White Hart Lane club.

He was left on the bench during their 2-1 loss to Stoke prior to the international break.

Man Utd could make an £18 million bid for the star.
