Ex-Man Utd Ace: Rooney Wants To Be A Winner, Not A Record Breaker

Former Manchester United hero Louis Saha has declared that Wayne Rooney would rather be a winner than a record breaker, as reported by the Daily Star.

Rooney is closing in on breaking the record for the most goals scored for the English national side, with the player’s pair of strikes over the international break edging him ever closer.

However, Saha does not believe that this is what encourages him, with Rooney instead motivated by winning the matches that he appears in.

He said: “It is all about winning trophies for him. That’s more important to him.

“Thierry Henry is France’s all-time leading scorer but if you ask him, it’s not about how many goals he scored but how many helped win something for his country. That’s how you’re judged.

“If a record is there to be broken then Rooney will definitely try to beat it. He is that type of a player, a very passionate guy.

“And to become your country’s greatest goalscorer is a dream to fulfil. But it was never his ambition to do that because he’s a team player.

“You want to win World Cups. I’m sure Rooney would rather score the winner in a World Cup final than be remembered for the record.”

Saha worked with Rooney for four years while he was at Old Trafford, and got to see his winning spirit first hand.

Rooney is also on the cusp of breaking a handful of records at Man Utd, and Saha is of the opinion that the addition of a series of new strikers will motivate him to do even better.

He said: “Strikers don’t always get on well. But it’s helpful. It’s all about competition in your group. You are proud. You have to improve to make sure you are not left out.

“You always find players who have an ego. But this is very healthy. You always thrive under that competition because otherwise you will be dropped.”

Saha played for the likes of Everton and Fulham during his career.
