Ex-Liverpool Star: 23-Year-Old Arsenal Signing May Be The Best Of The Summer

Former Liverpool star Michael Owen has called Arsenal’s £16 million purchase of Danny Welbeck possibly the signing of the summer, especially now that he will be able to play as the main striker at the Emirates Stadium, as reported by the Daily Star.

Owen played with Welbeck during his unsuccessful spell at Manchester United, and he was pleased to see him score two for the England national side, where Owen was a key player in the past, against Switzerland on Monday.

Welbeck made a shock deadline day switch to north London for £16 million, and with the injury suffered by Olivier Giroud, the former Man Utd hitman is now expected to play in the central role that he has craved for so long.

Owen himself feels as though Welbeck being granted this opportunity will finally allow him to reach the heights that he is capable of.

He said: “He has always had doubters and I can understand why but I have always been a big fan of Danny’s.

“I trained with him for three years at Manchester United and he can really play, no question.

“People may complain about his goals ratio at Man United – but try getting in the team there.

“I had a good try with Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Chicharito there – there are so many good players.

“A lot of the time when Danny did play he played on the left or on the right.

“As his England record suggests, when he is played in the middle he can certainly score goals.

“I think he is a pretty good buy for Arsenal. They are the big winners here, with Danny himself. I can see him really improving.

“With Arsenal I think he will be given that chance to play in the middle and I think it could be one of the signings of the summer.”

Rio Ferdinand previously called Man Utd “mad” to have let Welbeck leave.
