Sheffield United Keen To Sign Leeds United Skipper – Reports

Sheffield United are reportedly very interested in the signature of Leeds United captain Jason Pearce, but manager Nigel Clough is unconvinced that it is within the Yorkshire club’s means to be able to capture him, as reported by Jonathan Buchan of BBC Radio Sheffield.

Pearce was appointed captain by head coach David Hockaday at the start of the new season and has played in every match since the campaign began. His partnership with Liam Cooper brought about Leeds’s only clean sheet thus far this season, against Middlesbrough, but Pearce did also feature in Saturday’s resounding 4-1 loss against Watford at Vicarage Road.

The defender moved to Elland Road two seasons ago while Neil Warnock was manager. He did struggle in his initial campaign, but went on to impress considerably last season, and losing him would probably be considered a huge blow. There are no indications that he wants a move away from the club, however, and even fewer that he would be keen to drop down a division to join Leeds’s local rivals.

Hockaday himself is under significant pressure after the last game, despite only taking charge of four games in the league since his appointment. Three have been losses, and the one victory against Middlesbrough was the result of luck rather than concerted effort. He was on the cusp of being sacked on Saturday evening, before Massimo Cellino had a change of heart.

Leeds travel to fellow Yorkshire side Bradford on Wednesday evening.

  1. He is the only player that gives 100% every game. What he lacks in pace, he more than makes up for in tenacity and endeavour and he isn’t frightened to stick his head in where he might get hurt – not too many of those kind of defenders left. He is one of the only players left at Leeds, that I trust to put in a honest and hard working shift.

    1. I manage a Sunday morning side and you have just described my center half, not good enough good lad always gave his all but time to go.

  2. It is frankly, bollocks to say the win at Boro was only down to luck. Granted luck was involved but there was also a huge amount of effort on behalf of the players, especially Stephen Warnock. The real problem is that the majority of the players we have are just not Championship/Premiership standard.

  3. Tries 100% but not good enough and lack of pace condemns him to lower leagues. Hopefully Leeds will be moving on up and will be less used, so surprised made captain.

  4. He might give 100% but that doesn’t make you good enough. Not clever enough at this level, makes very poor decision’s and not that good in the air. Hopeful that this transfer will go through as he’s been I’m charge of a terrible back 4 for 2 seasons now!

  5. Jason Pearce is the worst central defender to ever play for Leeds and I have always been baffled in what everybody sees in him at Leeds.
It is a huge insult to the more experienced Leeds players, such as Warnock, that Pearce has bizarrely been made captain for this season, so far.
Pearce is so slow and cumbersome and is forever hanging onto the shoulders of opposing strikers and then falls on the floor, usually while watching the ball go into the Leeds net.
Those people who say that Pearce always gives his best and is a warrior, should all realise that maybe Pearce’s best isn’t good enough for a tough league like the Championship and a struggling, high profile club like Leeds.
For the third season on the trot, the goals are still being conceded left, right and centre and Pearce is still first choice in the Leeds central defence, for the third season on the trot.
He is a liability and lets hope that he signs for Sheffield United.
