Liverpool Make £20 Million Man Their Fifth Signing Of The Summer

Liverpool have confirmed their fifth signing of the summer, the oft speculated upon addition of Dejan Lovren from Southampton, as confirmed by their official Twitter account.

The defensive dynamo joins the club for a fee speculated to be between £16 million and £20 million, with Southampton holding out for the higher fee until recently. The Anfield club seem to have buckled, despite Lovren recently declaring that his heart was already in Liverpool after a summer of interest from the Merseyside club.

Lovren represents Liverpool’s fifth signing of the summer and their first defensive one. Emre Can and Lazar Markovic have already joined from elsewhere, with Lovren being reunited with former Southampton teammates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana at his new club.

It is unsurprising that Liverpool would invest significantly in their defence this summer. Their back-line was never secure last season, and had they constructed a more solid unit, they may have turned their second placed finish into a first title in the Premier League era.
