Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Benfica over the transfer of superstar winger Nicolas Gaitan, as part of Brendan Rodgers’ attempt to use the huge £75 million transfer fee gained for Luis Suarez on the right players, as reported by the Independent.
The talented wide man has been repeatedly linked with moves to a series of clubs in the Premier League including Chelsea and Manchester United, but moves have failed to come to pass over the past few windows.
The Portuguese giants are not keen to lose Gaitan, and want his €45 million release clause activated, but French outlet RMC are claiming the Anfield club can sign him for a reduced fee.
Gaitain had apparently agreed to move to AS Monaco this week, but the deal fell through after the wealthy French side failed to agree a price with last season’s Europa League finalists.
While Liverpool expect to negotiate a reduced fee from his release clause of £35.6 million, Gaitan will still likely cost at least £30 million.
This would take Rodgers’ summer spending to over £100 million. Loic Remy is expected to join the club soon for a fee believed to be around £8.5 million, joining from west London club Queens Park Rangers.
