Jose Manuel Reina is set to stay at Liverpool next season, despite speculation in the press that he might return on loan to Napoli, according to La Gazetta dello Sport.
His agent has confirmed to the newspaper that the Spanish international intends to stay at Anfield. He fell out of favour under Brendan Rodgers after the signing of Belgian World Cup star Simon Mignolet. Mignolet was comfortably first choice last season.
Reina would go on to join former manager Rafa Benitez at Napoli on loan for the season, with whom he secured Champions League qualification. The Neapolitan side also won the Coppa Italia, beating Fiorentina thanks to two goals from wonderkid Lorenzo Insigne.
His agent Manuel Garcia Quilon said: “I’m aware of the rumours circulating about the future of Reina, but I can confirm that Pepe will play in Liverpool next season.”
Questions have to be asked about what role Reina will play next year, with Rodgers clearly rating Mignolet as the better goalkeeper. Reina struggled for form during the former Swansea manager’s first season at the club, and was replaced as Rodgers sought to qualify for the Champions League, something Liverpool did by finishing second.
