Tottenham Hotspur: Benoit Assou-Ekotto back in contention for the weekend

Benoit Assou-Ekotto

Having been sidelined with a knee injury three games into the season, Benoit Assou-Ekotto has finally returned to contention for Tottenham Hotspur ahead of their clash against Coventry City this weekend. Assistant Head Coach Stefan Freund reported that “Benoit is fit and training well” after training on Thursday.

Assou-Ekotto’s return will come as a boost to Head Coach AndrĂ© Villas-Boas, who has had to make do with the right footed Kyle Naughton at left-back in recent weeks, and, prior to that, had to employ the center back Jan Vertonghen on the left side of defence.

Assou-Ekotto, despite mainstream opposition at times, is statistically one of the Premier League’s best left backs. His improvement over the last few seasons can be summed up through the fact that in February 2011, he had far and away the league’s top interception number at 83.
